GTFF Bargaining: Information and Updates

The University of Oregon and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation are engaged in the collective bargaining process for a new contract. Updates will be posted on this page throughout the bargaining cycle.

May 8, 2026

The University of Oregon and GTFF held their third direct bargaining session on Friday, May 7. The GTFF presented on several of its article proposals: 

  • Article 3: Union Rights 
  • Article 13: Grievances 
  • Article 15: Arbitration 
  • Article 16: Discipline and Discharge 
  • Article 19: Summer Term 
  • Article 21: Layoff 
  • Article 22: Salary 
  • Article 23: Tuition Waiver & Fees 
  • Article 29: Paid and Unpaid Absences 
  • Article 45: Term of Agreement. 

The university presented its proposal for Article 25: Respectful Workplace and Support Services. The parties also discussed the university’s proposed changes to Article 38: Negotiation of Successor Agreement, from the last bargaining session. April 20, 2026 

The University of Oregon and GTFF held their second direct bargaining session on Friday, April 17, continuing the structured process of exchanging proposals and engaging in discussion. 

The university presented Article 38, Negotiation of Successor Agreement, as part of its initial proposals in this bargaining cycle. 

The GTFF presented on several articles it had passed following the previous session, including: 

  • Article 8: Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment
  • Article 24: Health Insurance
  • Article 27: Support and Resources for International GEs
  • Article 35: Immigration and Customs Enforcement
  • New article: Academic Freedom and Freedom of Expression  

The GTFF also presented two new proposed articles: 

  • Article 25: Respectful Workplace and Support Services
  • Article 26: Caregiving Supports 

Additionally, the parties discussed Article 39, Printing and Distribution of the Contract, previously presented by the university. 

The session focused on reviewing and clarifying proposals, with both parties asking questions and identifying areas for further analysis.

Early bargaining sessions often focus on establishing processes and norms and listening to each other’s interests and priorities. The university is continuing to evaluate the GTFF’s proposals in detail to support informed negotiations in upcoming sessions.

March 9, 2026

The UO and GTFF held their first direct bargaining session today for a successor agreement. The GTFF outlined their priorities, which include summer support for GEs, academic freedom and free speech, labor communications, consistency for research assistants, and protections for under-represented groups and non-U.S. citizen GEs. 

The university presented Article 39. Printing and Distribution of the Contract. 

The GTFF presented the following articles:

  • Article 8: Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment.
  • Article 24: Health Insurance.
  • Article 27: Support and Resources for International GEs.
  • Article 35: Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
  • New article: Academic Freedom and Freedom of Expression.
